Hidden Food Allergies

Have you heard of hidden food intolerance? Many people are sensitive to foods that they eat every day, yet they do not know about it. This hidden allergy stresses the immune system and may be the root cause of a range of conditions – from asthma, arthritis, and celiac disease to candidiasis (yeast syndrome), irritable bowel syndrome, and eczema.Food sensitivity triggers an inflammatory response in the lining of the gut and in other sites throughout the body, and inflammation is one of the biggest drivers of weight gain and chronic diseases. The top six food allergens to be aware of are gluten, dairy, corn, eggs, soy, and yeast (bakers or brewer’s yeast).

Studies suggest that the full-blown reaction to gluten, known as celiac disease, affects 0.7% of Americans, and about 30% may have non-celiac gluten intolerance. Both cases involve inflammation of the gut lining, which sets up the stage for leaky gut syndrome – in which bacteria and partially digested food molecules slip out, resulting in gas, bloating, cramps, aches, and pains.

Depending on the condition, symptoms may localize either in the gut or in other organs, causing muscle pain, joint pain, heartburn, diarrhea, or weight gain. Hidden food allergies may also serve as a trigger for many autoimmune diseases, such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

In most cases of hidden food allergy it is difficult to establish which food allergen causes symptoms, and some testing should be done. I use blood tests and a skin test (provocation-neutralization) to identify food items to which the patient is uniquely sensitive.

After clearing hidden food allergies, I frequently see dramatic results in weight loss, blood sugar and cholesterol control, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic sinusitis, chronic fatigue, psoriasis, eczema, anxiety, and attention deficit disorder, among other conditions. Best of all, since we are treating the root cause of symptoms—and not just the symptoms themselves—we can effect lasting change in the body and enhance your health like never before.
